Emotional Comfort

(c) Beth Grossman

In my years of Reiki practice and as a spiritual guide, the number one cause of distress is emotional.  We are sentient beings. We feel. No matter how shut-off we might be, the heart response cannot be ignored, though some try hard.  The rare person can deny emotion, but then they are dealing with other issues or states of being that detach them from feelings.

Emotions are real and cause us to react in ways that sometimes bring us shame, regret, and disappointment.  Yet, emotions can be bliss, the greatest high in the world. So, I'm not discounting emotions at all. I like them. I'm not afraid of emotions. I am open to feeling with the heart AND the mind.

However, sometimes we need to relax and focus on grounding and centering ourselves during high emotional response times. Balance is key to dealing with high emotion in a safe, positive, and healthy way.

In Reiki we have a very simple practice we can enact during high emotion times.  Just follow these simple guidelines and see if you are able to maintain a sense of balance.

Emotional Comfort Practice
  1.  As best you can, take a deep calming belly breath, inhaling down into your abdomen, on up to the throat.  Exhale slowly and controlled.  Repeat a second time.  Repeat a third time.
  2. Draw the power symbol first, followed by sei hei kei, the emotional symbol, on your palms and clap your hands together three times to activate it.
  3. Create a sei hei kei bubble around you by tracing the symbol in each of the 6 directions (east, west, south, north, above, below) and then before your body for sacred center.
  4. Place the palms of your hands over your heart chakra or solar plexus and sit quietly for up to 20 minutes. During this time, calm and quiet your mind by simply following the deep calming belly breath. If possible, after a minute of riding the breath, allow your focus to shift to your third eye chakra.
  5. I open to the Divine Guidance of Reiki. I am Divine Guidance.
  6. Let go, surrender mind, and open.
  7. When you feel calm, grounded, centered and balanced, take a gentle breath for higher mind, a gentle breath for light body, and a gentle breath for soul.
  8. Bring the palms of your hands together. Give silent thanks.  Namaste ~

Sometimes you may not have the space to be able to enact the Emotional Comfort Practice because you are in an office or a car or some other public place.  Never fear!  Here is an even more simple practice you can do.
  1.  Draw the power symbol first, followed by sei hei kei on the palms of your hands and place them on your thighs.
  2. Slow breathing.
  3. Anchor awareness in the heart.
  4. "Calm, calm, calm," is the silent mantra.
Lastly, when you receive a phone call from someone in distress, draw the power symbol first, followed by sei hei kei on the palms of your hands and hold one palm over the speaker, send the person calming energy.  Continue sending until you hear a noticeable shift in their breathing and manner of speach.
